BLUE MOON RECEIVES AIA DENVER AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Blue Moon: 2017 AIA Honor Award Winner

At this year’s annual AIA Colorado - Denver Awards Gala, Adam Harding, Brian Berryhill and Avik Guha accepted the Interior Architecture award for the Blue Moon Brewing Company. The project is Blue Moon’s flagship brewery and restaurant is located on a 1.22 acre site in the River North District (RiNo) of Denver, Colorado.  

“The diversity and beautiful work of all of the firms who put their heart and soul into creating magnificent works of architecture are truly spectacular to see. We are honored to recognize these Colorado architecture firms for exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and design,” said Cathy Rosset, Executive Vice President/CEO of AIA Colorado.

Completed in July of 2016, the project is an adaptive reuse of an existing 26,000 SF bow truss building built in 1951 that was formerly used for distributing plumbing supplies. Local and authentic materials such as concrete, stone, tile, steel and wood were used throughout the space to craft a timeless architecture that complements the original structure.

“The project goal was to deepen the emotional connection consumers have with Blue Moon via the brand’s face, place and story by creating a new brewery, restaurant/hospitality center,” said Harding, who was the project manager and lead designer for the brewery.  

The bar and the brew house needed to be visually connected to give the patron the sense that the beer is coming directly from the process. A self-guided tour hall, shop and a private meeting space along with the kitchen, administration and shipping / receiving spaces were required. The building connects to the past, but has created a modern space which speaks to the artfully crafted beers that are brewed with imagination and a spark of creativity. 

The 2017 AIA Colorado Design Awards Jury was comprised of four individuals: Manoj Dalaya, AIA of KGD Architecture (2017 Jury Chair), J. Paul Lewis, AIA of WKL Architecture (2017 Jury Co-Chair), Elizabeth Reader, FAIA of Reader & Swartz Architects, P.C., and Kevin Sneed, FAIA of OTJ Architects.
