Town of Milliken Police Department and Municipal Court

  • Milliken, CO

Roth + Sheppard Architects is providing needs assessment, programming and full design services for a new 14,183 SF police and meeting house facility for the Town of Milliken.   Projections from the needs assessment study determined the town could reach a population of approximately 15,000 residents within twenty years.

This 14,000 SF police facility is located in the central ore of downtown Milliken on Broad Street. Adhering to the town’s heritage, the new police and community hall facility is designed to fit the eclectic roots of Milliken’s colorful history.  The building incorporates a ‘Great Room’ or a central ‘Hub’ projecting toward Broad Street, allowing for greater visual connectivity between the Police Department and the community.  Additionally, by including natural day light, a children’s library and climbing wall within the lobby, a landscaped entry plaza, and a series of adjacent pocket parks, the idea of community interaction is further enhanced.

Design solutions included re-thinking the idea of a traditional police facility to meet the goals of community-oriented policing in a small rural community.  Transparency is incorporated to engage and welcome the community while maintaining an invisible level of security for the building’s occupants and public.  The notion of transparency is carried over into the site planning and the corner plaza, inviting the community to participate in the meeting hall events and special ceremonies.
